Seiche: (pronounced "saysh") an oscillating wave in an enclosed or partially enclosed body of water that vary in period from minutes or hours to days. The word originates from Swiss French "to sway back and forth" and was first observed in Lake Geneva, Switzerland by Francois-Alphonse Forel. On the Great Lakes, seiches can be sudden and dangerous with the Chicago Seiche of 1954 causing a 10-foot wall of water to overtake the lakefront.
